The Regional Science Springer Award is now the Stough-Johansson Springer Award for outstanding papers in the field of Regional Science, in honor of Roger Reece Stough, Annals Co-Editor-in-Chief from 1994-2011, and Börje Johansson, Annals Co-Editor-in-Chief from 1994 – 2014.
The prize is awarded annually for the best paper presented by an early-career scholar (no more than five years post-PhD) at the Annual Meeting of the Western Regional Science Association and published in The Annals of Regional Science.
Authors are invited to submit their winning paper to The Annals of Regional Science, official Journal of the WRSA, where it will undergo peer review and revision. The cash award of 500 USD will be paid upon submission of the paper.

- 2022: Nicholas Irwin (University of Nevada, Las Vegas, USA) & David Wolf (Kobe University, Japan) for their paper “Is it really bridging the gap? Fiber internet`s impact on housing values and homebuyer demographics”
- 2021: Gloria Cicerone (Gran Sasso Science Institute, L’Aquila, Italy) for her paper “Regional artificial intelligence and the geography of environmental technologies: Does the digital transformation meet the green transition?” (co-authored with Alessandra Faggian, Sandro Montresor & Francesco Rentocchini)
- 2020: Geoff Boeing (University of Southern California (USC)) for his paper “Off the Grid… and Back Again? The Recent Evolution of American Street Network Planning and Design”
